NewCrits offers classes, mentorship, and critique led by working artists, designed to support every stage of your practice, from quick recalibration to sustained development. Our services create the conditions to question what success means in a creative life, and to consider how art shapes how we think and move through the world. Our teaching and mentorship extend beyond the studio, grounded in the belief that aesthetic education is lived, not contained.
Founded in 2022 by artist, writer, and educator Ajay Kurian, NewCrits brings together artists committed to developing work through critical care, rigorous inquiry, and artist-to-artist dialogue.

Critical Care & Critique
We approach critique as a collaborative practice that facilitates healthy growth and sustainability for artists’ practice. It is not evaluation or performance, but a way of engaging another artist’s work with from the foundation of precision, rigor, and trust. We prioritize honesty without cruelty, generosity without vagueness, and conversations that can actively shift how work is understood and developed.
A Community of Artists
NewCrits is built by working artists. Every class, mentorship, and critique is shaped by lived experience within the conditions of the art world. This means guidance is direct from artists who understand the realities of sustaining a practice and remain committed to supporting others in doing the same.
